Stackable Credentials

Students completing the CPB will not only be highly qualified for entry-level positions, but they will also be well situated to continue their education in the biotechnology fields. All of the courses are requirements of DSU’s Bioinformatics bachelors degree and they also meet many of the first-year requirements for any of the Biological or Chemical degrees offered at DSU as well as the Bachelors in Computer Science.


A student completing any of the required courses for the CPB would have a stronger background in biotechnology and could obtain an entry level job. If they start the process by taking the high school-level Biotechnology course, they could take the CTE Biotechnology certification exam.


A student completing all 21-22 credits of the CPB will have sufficient knowledge and skill to be highly competitive for entry level jobs with salaries starting at $10-12/hour. These students would require considerably less on-the-job training than their peers.

Associate's Degree

Students could stack the CPB toward the completion of an Associates of Science by taking the additional 18-33 credits (depending on the courses chosen) required for this degree

Bachelor's Degree

Students who stack the CPB toward the completion of a Bachelor’s would be eligible for more advanced lab technician positions in management and starting salaries of $14+/hour leading to a career with a median salary of around $62,000. Stacking the CPB toward a Bachelor’s will also speed up the time it takes them to graduate as most STEM fields can take a minimum of three years of course work even if a student has completed their general education requirements through CE.

Program Design


While there are very few positions in southern Utah that require these advanced degrees, they often remain unfilled for years because of the lack of qualified applicates. BioStacks can help southern Utah train locals who are more likely to come home to fill these positions.

Masters Degree

A Master's Degree in a high-demand, applied area like Bioinformatics or Genetic Counceling takes two years to move into careers with starting salaries as high as $120,000

Bachelors Degree

Students completing a Bachelor's degree would be eligable for positions of $14+/hour leading to a career with a median salary of around $62,000

Associate Degree

With just 18-27 college credits in addition to the CPB, students earn a degree that makes it easy to transfer for a Bachelor'd degree within the state.


$10/hr apprenticeships with DSU/SUU partners DxNA, LUMEA, Precision Genomics, and SoftCell Biological, provide real work experience and help students get thir foot in the door with local companies looking for skilled labor.

With 21-22 college credits that can be taken as part of concurrent enrollment, students earn a degree that provides them with sufficient knowledge and skill to be highly competitive for entry level jobs with salaries starting at $10-12/hour

Empoyers recognize the CTE Biotechnology exam taken after the CE Biotechnology course as a cfredential for bassic lab skills, but less than half pass this need additional training
